What is a doula?
"A woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth." (Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, Mothering the Mother)
How can a doula help me?
- Studies show that doulas provide the following benefits:
- Shorter labors with fewer complications
- Less need for interventions such as pitocin, vacuum extraction and forceps
- Less need for pain medication
- Decreased incident of cesareans
- An overall better birth experience
What services can I expect from you?
As a labor doula, I offer an initial free interview. This will give us a chance to meet, and allows you to learn more about me and what exactly I can do for you.
Before your birth, I prefer to have one additional prenatal visit. This gives us a chance to continue to get to know each other, as well as for me to understand your birth plan and birth wishes.
You'll find I stay in contact regularly as your birth approaches. This allows me to be available to answer any questions or concerns and to share the excitement of your last trimester!
When you are ready for me, I will come to your house or meet you at the hospital, day or night. Additionally, I will stay with you 1-2 hours post partum to assist with breastfeeding and provide any advice I can offer.
Finally, I have one post partum visit after your baby is born. This is meant to help you with any breastfeeding issues as well as to give you the opportunity to discuss your birth experience, if you like.
